You give the cashier your manf. coupon that allows doubling/tripling for the item you purchased, the face value of the coupon is deducted from your total. The store will get reimbursed from the manufacturer for that initial amount. Then, the store gives you a discount equal to the amount of the coupon (in the case of doubling) or twice the amount of the face value of the coupon (thereby tripling your savings).





Stores do this instead of just taking cents off the regular price of the item you buy. Not all stores double or triple coupons, and most have limits on the amounts they will double or triple.
